Soybean Oil

Overview
Refined Soybean Oil is one of the world’s most widely consumed edible oils, extracted from the seeds of the soybean (Glycine max) and refined to remove impurities, color, and odor. It is a versatile, neutral-flavored oil valued in cooking, food processing, and industrial applications. Soybean oil is also a primary feedstock in biodiesel production, making it a key agricultural and energy commodity.

Technical Characteristics

  • Appearance: Clear, light yellow liquid
  • Odor/Taste: Neutral, bland, free from rancidity
  • Free Fatty Acids (FFA, as Oleic Acid): ≤ 0.1%
  • Moisture & Volatile Matter: ≤ 0.1%
  • Peroxide Value: ≤ 10 meq O₂/kg oil
  • Iodine Value: 120–141 g I₂/100 g (highly unsaturated)
  • Saponification Value: 189–195 mg KOH/g
  • Smoke Point: ~234°C
  • Fatty Acid Composition (typical):
    • Linoleic Acid (Omega-6): 50–55%
    • Oleic Acid (Omega-9): 22–28%
    • Palmitic Acid: 10–12%
    • Stearic Acid: 4–6%
    • Alpha-Linolenic Acid (Omega-3): 6–8%
  • Vitamin E (Tocopherols): ~80–120 mg/100 g

Specifications & Standards

  • Refined according to Codex Alimentarius, ISO 5509, AOCS, and EU food-grade standards
  • Complies with ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 requirements when used as a biodiesel feedstock

Applications

  • Food Industry:
    • Frying, baking, cooking, and salad dressings
    • Ingredient in margarine, shortenings, mayonnaise, and processed foods
  • Industrial Use:
    • Major raw material for biodiesel production (transesterification)
    • Used in paints, varnishes, inks, resins, and plastics
  • Retail Distribution: Bottled refined oil for consumer markets

Performance Advantages

  • High Polyunsaturated Content: Provides essential fatty acids (Omega-3 and Omega-6)
  • Neutral Taste: Ideal for use in processed foods without altering flavor
  • High Smoke Point: Suitable for frying and industrial food processing
  • Renewable Feedstock: Primary vegetable oil source for biodiesel worldwide

Handling & Storage

  • Store in cool, dry, dark places (< 25°C) away from heat and light to prevent oxidation
  • Shelf life: 12–18 months when properly stored
  • Supplied in bulk (flexitanks, tankers, IBCs) or consumer packaging (PET bottles, tins, drums)

Compliance & Testing

  • Typical testing parameters include FFA, peroxide value, iodine value, fatty acid profile, and color
  • Verified by independent Quality & Quantity (Q&Q) inspections (SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas)
